Luigi Ghirri + Paolo Ventura

“REALITY AS IT IS, INTERESTS ME LITTLE.”

Paolo Ventura
Galerie Janvrin is pleased to announce GHIRRI + VENTURA, an online exhibition dedicated to two Italian artists; Paolo Ventura (b. 1968) and Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992). The exhibition comprises 11 works, including five new, exclusive works by Paolo Ventura made in his studio in Tuscany, and six never-to-market vintage prints by esteemed photographer Luigi Ghirri.

First discovered in the 1970s, Luigi Ghirri is now recognized as one of Europe's leading pioneers of colour photography. Ghirri only began taking photographs professionally in his 30s, having trained prior as a surveyor and graphic designer, using these skills to create simple yet surreal snapshots of Italian day to day life. The six vintage photographs featured here all come from the same collection, and this is their first time to market.

Paolo Ventura creates what he terms 'invented worlds'. Using photography, collage and painting, Ventura meticulously crafts elaborate tableaux of fictional realities. For the five works shown here, Ventura used Ghirri's work as inspiration to create these meticulously constructed scenes.

In both artists' works, we see how the composition creates its own surreal version of reality. Ghirri photographs a Canon camera advert, but crops it to obscure the full ad and the context of where it was taken. Ventura flattens his depth of field to present a circus ring, complete with performers but devoid of an audience to perform for. Both artists force the viewer to question what happens beyond the frame.
